Wow! What a great year 2017 turned out to be for Del Alma Publications. Our most heartfelt appreciation to all who found interest and value in our work. Your patronage and recommendation is the driving force of our Latina-owned and operated organization whose mission is “Meeting the biliteracy challenges of the Hispanic learner.”
We started the year with the debut of ¡Todos a comer! A Mexican Food Alphabet Book at the R. T. Garcia Early Childhood Conference sponsored by Harris County Department of Education. It was so well received that we literally began our book tour with a bang, and in a month we sold 1,000 copies!
We continued with presentations from South Texas to Houston and from Houston to San Antonio and Austin. We enjoyed every minute of it. We especially enjoyed the NACCS FOCO conference at Texas A&M University – College Station where we met many advocates for Mexican American Studies who have become our friends and supporters.
In September we attended the Latino International Awards in Los Angeles, California, where our newest release ¡Todos a comer! A Mexican Food Alphabet Book received first place in the best Latino focused picture book category. (See post here.) We had also been notified earlier that the book was awarded the Purple Dragonfly Book Award for excellence in children’s books written in English.
We were so honored to also be able to exhibit and present in McAllen, TX at the Texas Association for Bilingual Education Conference, which is the premiere organization in Texas for bilingual and dual language educators. It was wonderful meeting so many teachers and future teachers from throughout the state. Our books were once again well received by teachers and administrators, and we were also approached by a major school book distribution company who expressed interest in carrying our books.
In November and December we connected with more educators at the Texas Education Service Centers Region 20 Conference in World Language Conference in San Antonio and Region 4 Bilingual / ESL Conference in Houston where once again we met so many great teachers and administrators.
We also participated in several book fairs throughout the Houston and South Texas area, including the Bayou City Book Festival, McAllen Book Festival and Laredo Book Festival as well as community events including the Houston East End Market Frida Fest and Cinco de Mayo celebration and HTX Boss Babes Christmas Market.
To conclude the year, Amazon surprised us with a whopping order of books to stock for the holidays in addition to their consistent sales throughout the year. Thus, 2017 was indeed a very good year for Del Alma Publications thanks to the many schools, teachers, and administrators who have found our books useful in “Meeting the biliteracy challenges of the Hispanic learner.”
