Bilingual Children’s Book on Hispanic Customs & Traditions Honored

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Zapata, TX – June 19, 2019 – Acclaimed south Texas author Dr. María Alma González Pérez is the recipient of a 2019 Skipping Stones Honor Award for her bilingual picture book, ¡Todos a celebrar! – A Hispanic Customs & Traditions Alphabet Book.

The Skipping Stones Award-winning books promote an understanding of cultures, cultivate cooperation and/or encourage a deeper awareness of nature, ecology, and diversity. The honored titles offer many ways to explore and understand families, cultures, places, societies, and their histories for readers of all ages. This book, which is the 2nd in a series of unique bilingual alphabet books, was selected in the multicultural and international category that honors contributions which build bridges of communications, understanding social justice and peace.

The book presents a glimpse into the Hispanic culture and its traditions in alphabetical format. Educational and picturesque, this book teaches by example. It includes holidays, celebrations, games, as well as beliefs that are so deeply rooted in the Hispanic way of life. As an added extension of learning, it also includes a glossary of cultural objects and a map of Spanish-speaking countries with their respective flags for reference. This book is dedicated to the Hispanic children of the U.S. with the great desire that they continue to embrace and to cherish their culture, but it will also help children of all nationalities to learn more about the Hispanic culture and its traditions.

The book has received praise from both professional literary journals and educators. Midwest Book Review noted “Exceptionally well organized and profusely illustrated, ¡Todos a Celebrar! A Hispanic Customs & Traditions Alphabet Book is unreservedly recommended for family, elementary school, and community library English/Spanish bilingual collections.” José Chavez, former bilingual educator and award-winning author said, “In ¡Todos a celebrar! colorful photographs and culturally relevant information enveloping Latino cultures, celebrations, and life are well represented. Sure to enrich the curiosity and academic focus for the young learner.”

¡Todos a celebrar! A Hispanic Customs & Traditions Alphabet Book was also recently selected as a top finalist for the 2019 International Latino Book Awards (ILBA) in the Best Children’s Nonfiction Picture Book category and Best Latino Focused Book Design. The ILBA awards are produced by Latino Literacy Now, a non-profit organization co-founded in 1997 by Edward James Olmos and Kirk Whisler. These books are a great reflection that books by and about Latinos are in high demand.
