FORMER UTPA PROFESSOR OFFERS BILINGUAL/ESL TEACHERS & PARENTS CULTURALLY RELEVANT CHILDREN’S LITERATURE
Dr. Ma. Alma González Pérez, former University of Texas Pan American Starr County Campus Director presents an easy-to use, visually pleasing, culturally relevant ABC book to reinforce letter and sound recognition using prior knowledge in her latest book, ¡Todos a Comer! – A Mexican Food Alphabet Book.
This alphabet book on Mexican foods will help children learn their alphabet while also learning about the ingredients and procedures for preparing many delicious meals. Its purpose is twofold: to build background about Mexican food and to provide further discussion or extension of learning. It may be used as a read-aloud or for shared reading in the early grades as well as for paired or independent reading at the 4th or 5th grade level.
Dr. Pérez states, “This is a classroom text and resource for the classroom with a culturally regional focus aimed at addressing the needs of Hispanic children in the United States. These children are losing so much of their culture because of the English-only curriculum they are exposed to in this country. Instead, these children need to be made proud of their culture and their identity. It is our goal that this book will be of interest and use for bilingual/dual language and early childhood programs.”
Each letter description is followed by a question which may be used to solicit an oral response as part of an oral language discussion or as a written response to the reading. This book may also be used as a reference source on Mexican food, as a resource for special teaching units on Hispanic culture, and also for holidays like national Hispanic heritage month, Día de los Niños, and Cinco de Mayo celebrations.
Riojas Elementary assistant principal Carrie Quinney had this to say about Perez’s latest offering “This book is awesome for both bilingual and monolingual children who want to learn more about the Hispanic culture. The illustrations are beautiful and the language is engaging and kid-friendly. Each page teaches about a different type of food and then asks a question to engage the children in conversation. Would be the perfect addition to a classroom or at-home library.”
Books are available for purchase through Del Alma Publications website or by calling 956-278-0760. List price for the book is $7.99 plus tax. Classroom sets of 10 or more books will be available for $7.00 a book. A one-(1) hour professional development session on using culturally relevant pedagogy as well as an orientation on using this book in the classroom can be provided at no charge and upon request.
