Zapata National Bank Donates Books to A. L. Benavides Elementary

PRESS RELEASE: Zapata, TX. June 3, 2016 – Mr. José M. Ramírez, III, President of Zapata National Bank, donated copies of Hello, Zapata! ¡Hola! by Dr. Ma. Alma González Pérez to all the children of A. L. Benavides elementary school in San Ygnacio, Texas.

A book presentation ceremony for the students was held by Dr. Pérez and Ms. Diana Brandon, school principal at A. L. Benavides elementary school and warmly and enthusiastically received by the students.  A student was overheard saying, “I’m enjoying this,” as he was leafing through the book and sharing with his classmate.

Mr. Ramírez, originally from San Ygnacio and a graduate of A. L. Benavides Elementary, went on to become valedictorian of his class at Zapata High School. He obtained a degree in business from Texas A & M University and also served as president of the Zapata County Independent School District Board of Trustees for many years.

Dr. Pérez was an educator with the Zapata Independent School District and also a professor of bilingual education with The University of Texas – Pan American. She is currently writing children’s books and teacher resource materials to narrow the achievement gap of Hispanic students.
